The holidays this year will be different for sure but that doesn’t mean that you should forgo basic precautions when you drive. Here are four things you should keep in mind to drive safely during the holidays.
1. Don’t Drive When Impaired by Alcohol or Drugs
This is conventional wisdom by now, but it’s worth repeating: never, ever, under any circumstances drive when impaired by alcohol or drugs. The consequences can be dire: Impaired-driving crashes killed 10,142 people in 2019 alone. Instead, consider options such as having a designated driver, calling a taxi, or using a ride share service.
2. Don’t Be Overconfident
It may seem reasonable to assume that less mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic should lead to fewer accidents, but the opposite is occurring in many places. For example, New York has registered more traffic deaths in 2020 than in 2019. This may be due to the fact that people are more reckless with fewer drivers on the road. Don’t be overconfident when you drive, even when traffic appears to be less busy than usual.
3. Avoid Distractions
This is another basic piece of advice you should brush up on. The holidays are a busy season from every point of view, including texts and other types of messages from friends and loved ones. While this is an invaluable part of the holidays, messaging or using your phone in any other way is not something you should do while you drive. Avoid distractions and focus completely on the road when you drive.
4. Pay Attention to the Weather
The weather is an important factor you should consider when you drive during the holidays. Before you head out on the road, be sure to check the weather conditions and drive at a safe speed that also takes into account the conditions of the road itself.
