Tax Day this year will be on April 18, which is less than one month away. That’s why today we share four quick tips that will make tax filing easier.
For Maximum Efficiency, File Electronically and Provide Accurate Details
Whenever possible, ask for your taxes to be filed electronically and choose direct deposit for your refund.
This will help the IRS be as efficient as possible when processing your return. Other things you can do to ensure smooth filing include:
- Use the correct filing status (single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, etc.)
- Report all your taxable income
- Double check basic details such as your name, date of birth, and Social Security Number (SSN).

Remember That You Can Request an Extension to File
If you can’t file your taxes by April 18, you can request an extension that will give you until October 17 to file your return.
Keep in mind, though, that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Even if you get an extension, you still have to estimate and pay your taxes by the April 18 deadline.
Another important requirement is that in order to get an extension, you must file your request no later than the regular deadline for your return.
Don’t Fall for Common Tax Refund Myths
If you are expecting a refund after filing your taxes, remember that the online tool Where’s My Refund is the best and most convenient way to track the status of your refund.
You can get accurate and up-to-date information via this useful tool. All other options are myths and urban legends for the most part. For example:
- You won’t get a more accurate refund date by calling the IRS.
- Ordering a tax transcript is NOT a smart, super secret way to get a refund date.
Finally, remember that these tips apply to federal taxes. State taxes may have other deadlines and procedures. Don’t hesitate to contact our experts if you need further information!
