The holidays are behind us and 2022 is here. It’s time to begin taking your Christmas decorations down and get down to work on everyday stuff — your taxes, for example. If you believe that Tax Day will be on April 15, think again.
When Is Tax Day in 2022?
As you may remember, Tax Day is held traditionally on April 15 unless it falls on a weekend or a holiday. It has been this way since 1954. It was then that April 15 was designated as Tax Day as part of a general tax overhaul.
Originally, Tax Day was on March 1 (the date specified by Congress in 1913 after the passage of the 16th Amendment), and then on March 15 (from 1918 to 1954).
This year, Tax Day will be on April 18, 2022. The reason is that April 16 is Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in Washington D.C. This year, April 16 falls on Saturday, which means that Emancipation Day will be celebrated the previous Friday, that is, April 15.
Some Tips to Keep in Mind
So, this year you get a couple of extra days to file your tax return. However, this doesn’t mean that you should leave things to the last minute. Begin gathering any supporting documents you may need and contact a tax professional if you have any questions.
While Tax Day was moved the previous two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s no official plan to extend the deadline this year.
Finally, remember that these dates and tips apply to federal taxes. State taxes may have different timelines. Check with your local tax agency or with a tax expert you trust to make sure you file and pay your taxes on time.
